Masterclass: introduction to Data-driven Design
This series of masterclasses prepare you for the unique position as an intermediary between academic knowledge and the practical application of that knowledge. You will build up solid expertise for designing user-centred, data-driven solutions as a facilitator between the digital and human domains. Moreover, it teaches you to be aware of the circumstances in which you need to perform your job.
The main perspective in this series of masterclasses is to link academic thinking to practical performance. Aside from critically discussing the fundamental transformations that shape the digital society, as well as its implications for social and economic interaction, you will learn the practical fundamentals of data science. This includes programming skills in Python to load, save, collect, scrape, process, clean, transform, analyse and visualise data. At the end of the course, you will know how to critically examine the opportunities and the limitations of data, code and basic algorithms from a critical, user-focused perspective.

Programme and learning objectives
Every masterclass consists of two parts:
- Theory where you learn and critically discuss transformations in digital society. This part will be conducted in English.
- Practical skills where you collect, store, clean, transform data from social media and other internet sources with Python programming (including locating sources of open data), and you know how to extend your skills set by independently learning how to gather data from sources or in ways that were not covered during the masterclasses. The projects can be developed in English or Dutch.
Day 1
Theory
- What are data/datafication (ontology & epistemology)
- Digital transformation & platform economy
Practical programming skills
- Variables and conditional statements
- Data structures, data storage and iteration
Day 2
Theory
- Digitalisation of social interaction: business, culture, and politics (research subjects and operationalisation)
Practical programming skills
- Functions, webscraping and basic data analysis
Day 3
Theory
- Online Discourses and Network analysis
- Digital methods 1 – (user) data, chances and limits
Practical programming skills
- Webscraping, APIs and simple text analysis
Day 4
Theory
- Digital methods 2 – (user) data, chances and limits
- Data/digital Ethics summary (addressed throughout the previous week but all insights collected here)
Practical programming skills
- Datavisualisation
After this series of masterclasses you can:
- understand and critically discuss transformations in digital society;
- understand and critically discuss how these transformations inform, effect, change the profession of data-driven designer;
- understand and critically apply ethical principles data-driven design (prototypes);
- collect, store, clean, transform data from social media and other internet sources with Python programming (including locating sources of open data), and you know how to extend your skills set by independently learning how to gather data from sources or in ways that were not covered during tutorials;
- make an informed decision on which method to apply when a particular type of data is to be collected;
- make an informed guess on how a particular concept makes use of data, what might be involved in gathering and interpreting the data, and how the data might steer interactions and can reverse engineer basis aspects of that concept;
- create simple data visualisations, can make an informed decision on which visualisation communicates best and most truthfully to a particular target group.
