The combination of practical lessons and academics when studying HU's Teacher Education in French Master programme prepares you to be well equipped to teach French in the upper form of secondary education in the Netherlands. You will have studied didactics, teaching theory and of course the French language. Moreover there is enough flexibility for you to choose your own pace during the course.
Content of the Master Teacher Education in French programme
Courses
Students read current literary texts as a team and write literary critiques as well as do a book presentation. Attention is paid to the didactics of teaching youth literature to the upper levels of secondary schools, mainly focusing on the Havo.
This course focuses on language skills and students should achieve level C1+.
This continuous course explores the didactics of especially upper secondary school levels of modern foreign language teaching. Examples of such themes may be: developing curricula, exam training, internationalisation, differentiation and language policy amongst others.
This course focuses on bolstering your educational knowledge.
This course builds your research skills.
During this course students study five linguistic topics based on second language acquisition as well as researching one aspect of second language acquisition.
During this course you'll study and analyse French literature.
Not only do students read and analyse poetry from the Renaissance up to the present, they also explore the didactics by preparing poetry lessons for the upper levels of secondary school.
In year 2 there is a strong emphasis on your oral French academic skills. You will increase your knowledge about French literature and linguistics as well as undertake a research project in the field of teaching methodology. An example of such a project is: "Student motivation for literature: A thematic approach to teaching literature to upper form students with the aim to increase student motivation for literature."
Courses
This course focuses on listening and speaking skills and students should achieve level C1+.
Teaching a language does not only consist of studying the literature. One should also pay attention to the influences of film, art, theatre, dance and music.

During this course you'll study and analyse French literature of the 19th century.
Throughout the Teacher Education in French Master programme you work and teach in the higher years of Dutch higher secondary and tertiary education (HAVO, VWO and HBO in Dutch), learning as you go.
Thesis
The topic of your final thesis is based on your personal experience in your day-to-day teaching practice. Your research should show that you are ready to advance your teaching career.
